Geocachers had another chance to take in the natural beauty of the Cape Breton Highlands National Park during the 2nd annual geocaching event on 5 June 2010.

The event hosted by John Francis Lane of CBHNP and Kerry Willcox, “stagunner” started  at the Cheticamp Visit Centre with an introduction  to the event and pretty good coffee. Geocachers  exchanged stories  of the hikes they attended and other cache related stuff. The group was not large but pretty normal for a Cape Breton  gathering, we seem to only get about 10-12 cachers at our events.

We were fortunate to have Erich Muntz, the Resource Conservation Supervisor, from Ingonish briefly explain the human –animal interaction that occurs in the park and what was the best way to deal with an encounter with wild life. It seems that the best thing to do in most cases is not to panic, remaining calm and assessing the situation quickly will result in a passing encounter.  He explained that the three main animal, black bears, coyotes and moose could be present at any time while in the park and that one should be prepared for any type of meeting.

Coyotes

  • will be curious and know food may be available
  • Hike in a group; use a loud whistle, air horn.
  • Do not throw food scraps into the bush.
  • Carry a walking stick , wave it about to make yourself appear larger.
  • Maintain eye contact, do not run away, and appear more threatening.
Bears
  • Hike in a group
  • Do not get between mother and young
  • Do not run
  • Carry bear spray and know how to use it.
  • Most likely the most aggressive if young are present.
Moose
  • Will be aggressive if young are present
  • Allow the animal a clear route of escape
  • Place  an object between you and the moose.
  • Do not get close for the photo op, it could hurt.
After the pepper spray demo the cachers were given the coordinates for the Fish Cove cache and off they went to get the cache, Stagunner stayed behind to conduct a geocaching demonstration to some folks that wanted to learn more about it.
At 4 pm the weary but happy hikers returned from the Fishing Cove trek with some good stories.
We then passed out all of the nice prizes; including The North Face items via The Trail Shop & CBHNP season pass went to Out For a Stroll.
Special thanks to the Park staff and to all of the cachers who attended.

2010 Event Details (GC270AQ)

There will be one new geocache in the park, commemorating the former Acadian community of Cap-Rouge and celebrating the addition of a new trail in the National Park.  This year’s event takes place on International Trails Day and will give geocachers a sneak-peek of the spectacular new trail, Le vieux chemin du Cap-Rouge.

The workshops are designed to introduce the newcomer to the sport of geocaching, the national park, and safety in the woods. Come and enjoy a day of discoveries and activities.

There will be a last minute change, where the new geocache will NOT be along the new trail "Le vieux chemin du Cap-Rouge". At this time, the trail may not be completely ready; as such the park has decided to move the geocache to another nearby trail.

The rest of the event should remain the same.

All five geocaches related to the cacheport have been activated and geocachers are now able to participate in the challenge for the 2010 season.
