Irishtown Nature Park Event & CITO

On July 12th I was contacted by the city of Moncton to help them understand Geocaching and how it was being done in Irishtown Nature Park. I met with Charles Landry and Heather Hawker to see what caches were there and how we could improve the caching experience in the park. The City of Moncton had previously done an environmental study to learn what was in the park, which is part of the Fundy Biosphere, a UNESCO world heritage site. They discovered some plant an animal life that they wanted to protect and preserve therefore they developed a Geocaching Policy for the area. This meant that some of the existing caches should be removed, replaced or moved. They also wanted to have some new caches placed for an event day. That is where I came in. I walked the Park with Charles to determine where they would like to have the new ones placed, they choose areas where they wanted to attract people. I, along with help from cachers in the Moncton area for the wording and translation, came up with 4 caches that would be part of a passport/punch system similar to the National Parks. I also planned for a regular event and a CITO to attract cachers and kick it off. In total, eight different caches were developed for the day; regular, multi, puzzle, letterbox, WherIGo, an Earthcache and the 2 types of Events.
I also included the ACGA as a partner for this idea and the ACGA is the owner of the 4 passport caches, contributed some prizes and is also on the back of the Coin. The Coin was the biggest surprise of all, the City of Moncton agreed to purchase 250 wooden nickel type coins from the 3 Geeks and give them out to the cachers who find all four ACGA caches in the Park. The coins are trackable and feature the park logo on the front and the City of Moncton and the ACGA info on the back.
The event was almost a washout, literally, Tropical Storm Danny left over 100mm of rain overnight before the event but the sky behaved on Sunday and the only things wet were a few feet from the wet trails. 55 cachers signed the logbook and 61 door prizes were given out which included some Maple syrup made by the City staff, Garmin shirts and hats, lunch bags, cache containers, over 15 coins and a homemade trackable hiking stick made by the host.
I would like to thanks Heather and Charles from the City of Moncton, The Cyr for doing up all the listings, 3 Geeks for some swag, Dragonflys for his support and prizes, PaulandStacey, Tigertracker, Ma&Pa for help with the listings and translations to French and all the cachers that came from far and wide to attend the event, I appreciate it all!!
